World of Warcraft: Forever will launch with comprehensive controller support, a significant first for the venerable PC-exclusive MMORPG. Blizzard views this feature as the initial phase of a broader strategy to enable players to experience WoW "on whatever you want."
In an interview with GamesRadar, WoW executive producer and vice president Holly Longdale elaborated on this vision, stating that the ultimate goal is to make WoW accessible "wherever you want, and, at some point, on whatever you want." The immediate focus, however, is on ensuring the controller implementation is robust and user-friendly. This ambitious undertaking begins with the November 4 release of WoW: Forever, which offers a reimagined classic WoW experience with updated content and features.
Longdale noted that advancements in hardware, such as the anticipated "Project Helix" from Xbox, suggest a future where platforms are more ubiquitous. She believes that the work being done on gamepad support for WoW: Forever will ultimately provide players with significant flexibility that extends beyond traditional PC gaming.
Initial hands-on impressions from BlizzCon 2026 indicate that the controller support in WoW: Forever is surprisingly effective, especially considering the game's 22-year history as a mouse-and-keyboard dominated title. While recent iterations of World of Warcraft have included rudimentary controller options, Forever's implementation is described as far superior, functioning seamlessly without the need for third-party addons.
The game offers approximately 28 available keybinds, facilitating combat and quest interactions. Navigating menus and managing inventory present a steeper learning curve with a controller, but this trade-off is considered worthwhile for the enhanced portability and flexibility, particularly on handheld devices like the Xbox ROG Ally X.
While Blizzard has not made specific announcements regarding a console version of World of Warcraft, the company has indicated that such a development would not be kept secret. However, the possibility of WoW appearing on consoles may be closer than anticipated. Rumors surrounding Xbox's next console, codenamed Project Helix, suggest a hybrid device capable of running both console and PC games, which could potentially include World of Warcraft. This console is reportedly targeting a 2028 release and may incorporate a handheld component.
In the interim, Blizzard is focused on preparing for the launch of WoW: Forever, which includes adjustments to racial abilities and enhancements to the game's controversial layering system. Players who have purchased the new optional Skyborne race can already create their characters in anticipation of the launch day. World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled to release on November 4.
