Blizzard has announced that the controversial layering system in World of Warcraft: Forever will receive significant improvements for the game's launch. Layering, a technical solution designed to manage large player populations by creating simultaneous instances of the game world, has been a point of contention throughout the beta.
This system assigns players to a specific layer based on factors such as connections to friends and the need for PvP balance. While it offers benefits like reduced competition for quest objectives and improved performance in densely populated areas, its implementation has led to frequent and jarring player dissociations. Common complaints include players being unexpectedly shifted to different layers when leaving groups, crossing zone boundaries, or using in-game transport like boats and zeppelins. These shifts have been reported to disrupt gameplay, such as players suddenly finding themselves in hostile environments or losing the sense of a persistent, shared world.
Associate Production Director Clay Stone stated that Blizzard recognizes these issues and is actively working on solutions. "Bringing all players together within each ruleset, while also recreating some of the original WoW's 'small-realm-feel' social experiences such as repeat encounters with other recently met players in the game, is an important part of protecting and nurturing social experiences in WoW: Forever," Stone explained. He specifically mentioned improvements aimed at preventing players from being separated from their groups on transports and addressing large groups being layered when entering or leaving capital cities.
While Blizzard aims to minimize layering as much as possible, Stone noted that some level of it will remain due to infrastructure demands. The company is committed to making further adjustments post-launch to ensure the world feels as seamless as possible. Player feedback has highlighted scenarios where these layer changes have led to negative experiences, including one instance where a group on a boat to Eastern Kingdoms was abruptly moved to a layer filled with opposing faction players, resulting in their demise.
Concerns have also been raised about the potential for exploitation, with some players intentionally using layer transitions to evade PvP combat or grief others. The community has expressed a desire for a more stable experience, allowing for consistent interaction with other players encountered during leveling and world activities.
World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled to launch on November 4. In parallel, Blizzard has also introduced a new server option specifically for PvP-focused players.
