The name reservation system for World of Warcraft Forever, intended to allow players to secure character names before the game's full launch on November 4, is currently experiencing delays. While initially planned for a staggered rollout, with Europe first and North America following later today, Blizzard has acknowledged technical issues are hindering access.
The World of Warcraft Forever team issued a statement via the Battle.net client stating, "World of Warcraft: Forever Name Reservations are delayed while we resolve some final technical issues. Thank you for your patience!" This message comes as many European players have found the 'Play' button on the Battle.net launcher grayed out, preventing them from even accessing the game to attempt name reservations.
According to the intended system, players launching the latest version of WoW Forever should be able to select a ruleset, such as PvE or PvP, and create up to three characters with reserved names. However, the current technical problems are preventing this process for a significant portion of the player base.
Discontent has surfaced on the WoW forums, with a lengthy thread dedicated to the ongoing issues. Players have expressed frustration over what they perceive as recurring launch problems. Some users have reported finding workarounds to launch the game directly from its installation folder, though this has not necessarily resolved the inability to access the name reservation feature, as ruleset selection remains unavailable for some.
One player suggested that the grayed-out 'Play' button might be related to the Battle.net launcher's region settings, recommending that users log out, clear the account name, and reconfigure the region setting to Europe if it was mistakenly set to Americas. This adjustment reportedly made the 'Play' button active again for some.
With the North American name reservation window set to begin soon, there is concern that similar delays may affect players in that region if the underlying technical issues are not resolved promptly. Blizzard has not yet indicated a new timeframe for the name reservation system's availability.
Looking ahead to the full launch of WoW Forever on November 4, Blizzard has discussed plans for regular updates and the potential inclusion of continents added in later expansions, such as Northrend and Pandaria.
