World of Warcraft executive producer Holly Longdale shared insights at PAX Australia regarding the immense popularity of the World of Warcraft: Forever beta and the team's strategy for managing player feedback ahead of the game's release. Longdale described the beta's player influx as "insane," noting it was the largest beta in Blizzard's history, a sentiment echoed by a server cap increase shortly after its launch.
While delighted by the high level of player engagement, Longdale emphasized the need for selectivity when processing feedback. "Social media when these MMOs came out wasn't really a thing, so we had some very focused areas where we got feedback. Now feedback comes from everywhere," she explained. "And I think the lesson we learned the most over time is 'You don't listen to the loudest people in the room.'"
The development team has demonstrated responsiveness to beta feedback, implementing changes such as overhauling Skyborne elf models to align with the Classic WoW aesthetic, adjusting dungeon loot, and modifying spell buffs. According to Longdale, these updates stem from a combination of community input and data-driven analysis.
Longdale also acknowledged that not all player decisions will satisfy everyone. "You just have to accept that you're not going to make everybody happy. We have to make some calls, determine, 'What is our game? What is it for? Who is it for?' We have to try and walk that line as much as possible because otherwise you'll give a lot of people a little bit, instead of a complete experience," she stated.
World of Warcraft: Forever appears to have resonated with both long-time and lapsed players, despite its divergence from modern WoW and Classic re-releases. The game is set to fully release on November 4th, with the key question being its ability to sustain a strong community post-launch.
