World of Warcraft: Forever Revives Iconic Arena Quest Tradition

World of Warcraft: Forever is set to continue a long-standing questing tradition with the introduction of an ogre arena championship in its new Riverglades zone. Slated for release on November 4, the expansion is gradually revealing new details, including a focus on this familiar type of player-versus-environment challenge.

A recent video titled "Your Leveling Journey Past 30" provided a closer look at the Riverglades zone, highlighting its roots in Warcraft 2 lore and its diverse factions. The zone is divided between the Alliance's Brotherhood of the Horse and the Horde's Boulder Rock ogre clan. Within Boulder Rock territory lies the Bloodmasters Ring, described as a place where players will test their mettle against the ogres' strongest fighters. This arena concept strongly echoes the iconic Ring of Blood quest chain from World of Warcraft's first expansion, The Burning Crusade.

The original Ring of Blood in The Burning Crusade required a full group of players to battle through a series of bosses in Nagrand, culminating in a championship fight and offering significant rewards that were valuable in the early endgame. This type of escalating arena challenge has since become a recurring feature in subsequent expansions, appearing as the Amphitheater of Anguish in Wrath of the Lich King, the Crucible of Carnage in Cataclysm, and even making a return in the Warlords of Draenor expansion as the Ring of Blood.

Details regarding the specific rewards for the new Ring of Blood in WoW: Forever remain undisclosed, though World of Warcraft Classic expansions have historically provided potent gear. It is also unknown if any original characters associated with the quest, such as Gurgthock and Wodin, will reappear.

Beyond the arena, Blizzard has also shared information about WoW: Forever's endgame raids. Similar to WoW Classic, players will need to undergo an attunement process for Onyxia's Lair to acquire the Drakefire Amulet, and the game's developers have advised players to prepare fire resistance gear for this encounter. The expansion will launch with two new raids: Barrow Deeps, an eight-boss raid with multiple entry points including Mount Hyjal and Blackmaw Hold, and the larger Hyjal Summit raid, featuring 13 bosses.

WoW: Forever is undergoing significant adjustments leading up to its launch, with a recent overhaul of racial abilities impacting character power. Blizzard has also offered insights into the MMO's future endgame strategy in interviews, indicating ongoing development and refinement of the player experience.
