Blizzard is altering the visual design of World of Warcraft: Forever's new Skyborne race in response to significant community feedback. The developers announced that new in-game models are being created to better align with the game's early MMO aesthetic, a move that has been met with enthusiasm from players.
Responding to Player Feedback
The changes were initially discussed on the official World of Warcraft: Forever podcast, where senior game designer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield acknowledged player concerns regarding the Skyborne humanoid and druid character models. He indicated that the team was working on an update, which has now been detailed in a blog post on the World of Warcraft website.
The development team stated their goal is to "uphold the original WoW era aesthetic" while providing players with more customization options. The blog post admitted that some of the initial visual concepts for new additions, particularly the Skyborne models, did not fully meet this objective. The developers noted that while the Skyborne's druid forms are meant to reflect their exotic origins, they should not clash with the established visual language of the game world.
Visual Updates Detailed
Both standard and druid forms of the Skyborne elves will receive modifications. Comparison images shared by Blizzard show a reduction in the models' softness, a decrease in color saturation, and the addition of more detailed fur textures. These adjustments aim to make the models more cohesive with the existing game art.
Furthermore, Blizzard plans to update the standard definition models for the Skyborne, which some players found jarring when compared to the game's legacy races. New standard definition models are scheduled for release in early 2027. Images of these work-in-progress characters, featuring sharper angles, were presented as part of the announcement.
Community Reception
The response to these announced changes has been overwhelmingly positive. Players on Blizzard forums and Reddit have expressed their gratitude for the developers' responsiveness to feedback. Many have highlighted this as a positive sign of the development team's commitment to player sentiment, alongside other recent adjustments like altering loot rarity and changing character creator icons to match the Classic WoW style.
User Ubberman commented on Reddit, stating, "Who are these people? That is an exceedingly high response rate and for rather minor things that only add to the feel. If they keep this up for even a year, WoW Forever will genuinely be the best World of Warcraft version to date." This sentiment reflects a broader appreciation for the team's willingness to iterate based on player input.
World of Warcraft: Forever is currently in beta. The game experienced high player demand, necessitating an increase in server capacity. The full launch of WoW Forever is set for November 4.
