Players of World of Warcraft have begun reporting an unusual phenomenon: their characters appear to continue fighting enemies, even after they have disconnected from the game. This behavior has been observed primarily in dungeon encounters following the recent Curse of Ula’tek 12.1 update.

Initial reports suggest that instead of characters freezing or disappearing upon a player disconnecting, they remain active, engaging bosses and casting spells without any player input. One player described an instance in a dungeon where an Evoker disconnected approximately 39 seconds into a boss fight. A linked video reportedly shows the disconnected character continuing to cast spells and participate in combat. The player who posted the observation claims this occurred twice in separate dungeons, and other players in the replies have corroborated similar experiences.

One common anecdote describes a warrior character that continued attacking a boss for nearly 30 seconds after the player’s client crashed and they had to force-quit the game. The player was actively narrating their relogging process while their character remained engaged in the fight. Another player commented on the strangeness, stating, "Suuuper weird."

Several theories have emerged within the community to explain this behavior. One suggestion is that players might be using bots to simulate continued play, though this is largely dismissed as an unlikely and pointless deception. Another possibility relates to the game's relatively new one-button rotation feature, which could potentially queue up actions and continue executing them for a short period after a disconnect. However, the observation of characters moving after disconnecting leads some to doubt this explanation.

A more optimistic theory posits that disconnected characters are temporarily converted into "followers." This mechanic, typically used to allow players to complete easier dungeons with NPC companions, could theoretically take over a player's character briefly after a sudden disconnect. Such an AI takeover might execute a basic rotation and attempt to avoid immediate threats, providing the player with a window to reconnect without severe consequences for their group.

However, if this is an intentional feature, its potential for exploitation is significant. Furthermore, the absence of any official announcement from Blizzard regarding such a substantial gameplay mechanic makes it more probable that this is an unintended bug. Blizzard has been contacted for comment regarding the nature and cause of these reported occurrences.
