World of Warcraft: Forever's enhanced lighting and water effects are being considered for inclusion in the retail version of the game, according to a statement from Blizzard. "I think they were made here first, is a better clarification," an unspecified individual stated in an interview with IGN. "I think they're planning on eventually doing some of these same things in the Retail game as well. So it's not like it's a Forever-only feature, like better water, better lighting, those things are coming for retail as well. I don't know when, but I know they're talking about doing it."
The visual improvements in Forever are a result of a deliberate effort to recreate Azeroth as players might remember it from 2004, rather than its actual original appearance. This involves meticulously adjusting the lighting and color palette of each zone. "In our minds 20 years later, we remember what WoW was like in 2004 as just a little bit shinier and better than it actually was," the source explained. "So there's this vision of, let's give people Azeroth as they remember it, not as it actually was … So let's make it actually look as cool as our memories tell us it looked."
These graphical updates have resulted in a visually striking experience in Forever's beta. For example, the Durotar zone features saturated cool shadows contrasted with bright orange hues, and Ashenvale benefits from godrays filtering through its canopy. The effort to bring these visual enhancements to the live game presents a significant undertaking. World of Warcraft Classic, on which Forever is based, contains approximately 114 zones. In contrast, the retail version of World of Warcraft, spanning over twenty years of expansions, boasts around 1272 zones. Bringing all of these to the same visual standard as Forever's updates would be an immense task. However, the possibility remains that future retail zones could implement this new technology, or that it could be retroactively applied to existing ones.
