World of Warcraft is set to receive a dedicated Dungeons & Dragons expansion this November, bringing the popular MMORPG into the realm of tabletop roleplaying. The new D&D release aims to capture key gameplay elements and systems familiar to longtime players of Blizzard's online game.
Azerothian Adventures in D&D
The D&D: World of Warcraft expansion will provide Dungeon Masters with resources for creating campaigns set in Azeroth. It introduces all 13 original WoW classes, supplemented by six new subclasses, three modified subclasses, and over 40 class specializations. The game will also feature 11 WoW races, including tauren, draenei, forsaken, and trolls. Additionally, rules will be provided for adapting existing D&D races like humans, dwarves, goblins, orcs, and elves to the WoW setting, with racial choices potentially granting a starting Renown Score with specific Azerothian factions.
Replicating MMORPG Systems
Content from the MMORPG, including spells, items, and monsters, will be translated into the tabletop format. The expansion includes over 60 new spells and 25 new magic items, such as mounts and companion creatures. To further emulate the MMORPG experience, D&D: World of Warcraft incorporates 10 WoW professions, allowing players to engage in crafting and gear improvement. A significant feature is the inclusion of 25 factions with which players can increase their Renown, unlocking perks and rewards as they climb the ranks, mirroring the system in the video game.
On the combat front, the expansion adds 50 new monsters and 30 dungeon bosses. Seven iconic WoW dungeons, including The Deadmines and Onyxia's Lair, will be playable. An optional Icecrown Citadel Adventure Map Pack will also be available, taking players from level 16 to 20 through the citadel and culminating in a confrontation with the Lich King.
In-Game WoW Rewards
For players who prefer to stay within the MMORPG, preordering certain editions of the D&D: World of Warcraft expansion will unlock D&D-themed items in World of Warcraft. These in-game rewards include a Black Dragon mount, a Gazer pet, and a Mimic chest toy and housing decoration. The $80 physical and digital combo edition is noted as the most affordable option for obtaining these items.
D&D: World of Warcraft is scheduled for release on November 17, with early access starting on November 3.
