Wuhu Island, a familiar haunt for many Nintendo fans, has been significantly reimagined and enhanced in the new Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, according to recent impressions. While the initial Nintendo Switch Sports title was met with criticism, its successor's rendition of the digital island has proven to be a surprisingly delightful experience.

Evolving Landscape

The island has undergone substantial changes since its last appearance. A new archipelago now surrounds the central landmass, and its mountains feature newly carved caves. Man-made attractions like cafes have also been added, seamlessly integrating into the natural environment. Sports have been relocated to picturesque spots, such as the volleyball court nestled within a forest stream and the basketball court situated beside a tranquil lake, aptly named "Hoop Haven."

Open-World Exploration

Three specific activities allow for extensive exploration of Wuhu Island: Prop Plane, Power Cruising, and Skateboarding. Prop Plane, a returning sport from Wii Sports Resort, offers the most engagement with 105 "Spocco Photos"—points of interest—to discover. Despite the game's focus on exploration and side missions like shooting down balloons or finding hidden hibiscuses, the island's detailed presentation encourages repeated engagement.

The other two exploration sports provide ground and sea-level perspectives. Skateboarding, in particular, is highlighted for its surprisingly functional controls, allowing players to team up with friends to find photos and complete objectives. This offers a new way to interact with the island beyond aerial views.

A Living, Breathing World

A key improvement noted is the sense of life on Wuhu Island, a notable contrast to its previous iteration. While some areas are sparser, the care taken in crafting landmarks and providing lore through the narrator upon discovering photos enhances immersion. Encounters with the island's lore, such as learning about a floating cafe or observing boats gathered for a whale sighting, contribute to its vibrant atmosphere. The presence of Miis and even the sometimes-criticized Sportsmates interacting on the island further reinforces this feeling of a lively, inhabited digital space.
