Chris Carter, the visionary behind the acclaimed science fiction series The X-Files, is embarking on a new cinematic endeavor with Queens for a Day, a comedy that delves into the complexities of time travel and identity. The film, penned by Carter's wife Dori Carter, offers a satirical look at nostalgia and the consequences of unchecked desires.
Recalling the inventive time-travel narratives explored in The X-Files, particularly the fan-favorite season 6 episode "Triangle," Carter's new project similarly plays with temporal displacement. In "Triangle," Agent Mulder finds himself aboard a World War II-era luxury liner, encountering alternate versions of familiar characters. This latest film, Queens for a Day, centers on a contemporary talk show host who, after an accident, is sent back to the 1950s. There, she finds herself in her own mother's body, tasked with raising her younger self—a child she reportedly dislikes.
The film stars Erin Boyes, known for her roles in various Lifetime movies and Sawtooth Mountain. Carter is directing, with Grace Gilroy, a producer on The X-Files and Alien vs. Predator, attached as a producer. The official description highlights Queens for a Day as a "biting satire on blind nostalgia and the classic warning of being careful what you wish for."
Queens for a Day is eschewing a traditional theatrical or streaming release. Instead, it will premiere at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles starting this week, with three initial showings on October 16th, 17th, and 22nd. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Chris Carter. Following this Los Angeles debut, the film is slated to open at additional venues with a similar format. Updates on future screenings can be found on the film's official Instagram page, @queensforadaymovie.
