Microsoft's special 25th-anniversary edition Xbox Series X console, released to celebrate a quarter-century since the original Xbox launched in November 2001, sold out within minutes of pre-orders opening.
Pre-orders for the Xbox Series X25 limited edition went live on Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT and were sold out by 10:01 a.m. The console was already out of stock by the time Xbox officially tweeted about the pre-orders. The limited edition package includes a controller with a translucent OG green design and a digital copy of Halo: Campaign Evolved.
This special edition console carried a retail price of $899.99. This is a significant increase from the original Xbox Series X's launch price of $499.99 six years prior, which had since risen to $799.99. Despite the higher cost, the anniversary-themed Xbox sold out almost immediately, indicating demand that either outstripped Microsoft's supply or circumvented conventional purchasing channels.
The console has since appeared on resale platforms like eBay, with scalpers listing the Xbox Series X25 for prices ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. Sold listings on eBay show that some buyers have paid as much as $2,995 for the console, more than triple its retail price.
