Xbox is undergoing a significant strategic reset under new CEO Asha Sharma, who has outlined a comprehensive plan to revitalize the struggling division and achieve sustained growth. In a recent internal memo, Sharma detailed a four-pillar strategy focusing on Core, Content, Creation, and Connection, aiming to see Xbox return to growth by the end of fiscal year 2027 and secure industry-leading margins by FY2030.

The current fiscal year has seen Xbox revenue decrease by 7%, a stark contrast to the booming performance of many other Microsoft divisions, particularly its server products and cloud services. Sharma acknowledged this disparity, stating, "Our business did not grow with our audience," referencing a period where over 200 million new players came to Xbox without a commensurate increase in business growth. The immediate goal is to "close that gap by investing in what players value."

Sharma's plan centers on four key pillars: CORE, which involves strengthening the Xbox platform with a focus on console as the foundation of its fandom; CONTENT, aiming to grow existing games into global franchises; CREATION, with the ambition to make Minecraft the "world's creator platform"; and CONNECTION, focused on extending beloved game worlds to fans.

Strategic Initiatives and Long-Term Goals

Beyond the core pillars, Sharma's memo revealed a shift towards a more centralized development model, moving away from a decentralized approach to focus on stronger franchises and innovative new ideas. This has already led to the divestment of five studios, with a renewed emphasis on major titles like Fallout and Elder Scrolls. Xbox leadership is developing long-term strategies for its biggest franchises, encompassing not just games but also film, TV, consumer products, live experiences, sponsorships, and expansion into the Chinese market.

Microsoft is already investing heavily in Minecraft, promising more support than ever before. The company also has a substantial slate of film and TV projects in development. These include a Call of Duty movie slated for 2028, a Gears of War movie and animated TV show for Netflix, a new Minecraft movie set for release in 2027, a third season of the Fallout series, and a Sea of Thieves movie. In total, a dozen film and TV projects are in the works.

Addressing Challenges and Workforce Changes

The path to recovery involves significant adjustments, including workforce reductions. Microsoft laid off 1,600 employees earlier this year and plans to part ways with another 1,600 in the coming year. This move is part of a broader "reset" aimed at streamlining operations and reallocating resources. Despite these challenges, Sharma highlighted Xbox's significant existing reach, noting that it serves nearly one billion people annually, with 100 million daily and 500 million monthly active users. The company aims to scale what works and achieve sustained double-digit growth in players and engagement by FY2030, with the ultimate ambition of being halfway to its long-term daily-player goal.

While console gaming remains the primary revenue driver and the bedrock of Xbox's player base, Microsoft is also reportedly working on a new system codenamed Project Helix. However, this initiative may face modifications due to AI-driven pressures on memory and component supply, ironically exacerbated by Microsoft's own advancements in artificial intelligence.

Xbox's chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, has previously spoken about the division's recent struggles and the necessary steps for future growth, underscoring the strategic importance of Sharma's new direction.
