Xbox CEO Reiterates Vision for a 'Family of Devices' in Next-Gen Strategy

Microsoft is continuing to develop its next-generation Xbox strategy, codenamed Project Helix, with a focus on a "family of devices" rather than a singular console. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly restated this vision during a recent company town hall, emphasizing that "there is not one device that fits all."

This approach suggests a future where a primary console is complemented by other hardware, potentially including a portable gaming machine. Sharma indicated that while a "great console first" remains a priority, the company recognizes that "many players will be on the go." She also noted that Microsoft will leverage its manufacturing strengths for some products while partnering with others for different hardware solutions, with further details to be shared as plans evolve.

This is not the first time Microsoft has outlined its intention for Project Helix to be a multi-device ecosystem. Sharma previously told the BBC that the company was working on "a great family of devices for Helix." She has also stated that Project Helix is expected to "lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games," hinting at a hybrid functionality.

Microsoft has already experimented with a multi-device strategy in the current generation. The Xbox Series S serves as a more accessible entry point alongside the Xbox Series X. Furthermore, the company has engaged in partnerships, such as with Asus for the ROG Ally X handheld, which offers an Xbox experience on a portable device. This strategy is underpinned by Xbox's Play Anywhere initiative, allowing players to purchase games once and play them across different platforms.

The evolving hardware landscape is also influenced by external factors. Sharma has previously discussed exploring "radically different business models" to ensure affordability for consumers, potentially in response to ongoing challenges in the hardware component market that have impacted pricing for consoles and computer hardware.
