Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has articulated a significant ambition for the company: to "entertain more than a billion people each day and give everyone the opportunity to create and connect." This declaration comes at a tumultuous time for Xbox, following an internal letter that announced the divestment of four studios and the layoff of approximately 3,600 employees. Sharma expressed confidence in achieving this goal, stating, "I know we can achieve this goal. XBOX has many of the most beloved franchises in entertainment history, talented studios around the world, and we will return to growth in 2027."

To contextualize Sharma's aspiration, the peak daily player count for Fortnite during its popular "OG map" return in November 2023 was 44.7 million. Roblox, another immensely popular platform, recorded an all-time peak of 47.4 million players last year. Even combined, and assuming no player overlap, these figures represent less than a tenth of Sharma's target.

While Xbox retains ownership of renowned developers such as Mojang and King, which will now report directly to Sharma, their current player bases also fall short of the billion-daily mark individually. Minecraft, Mojang's flagship title, has sold between 350 million and 400 million copies across all platforms over 15 years. King, the developer behind the mobile sensation Candy Crush, boasts over 3.6 billion downloads for its free-to-play game and reports over 100 million daily active users. Even with these substantial figures combined, they account for only about one-fifth of Sharma's stated goal.

The path to achieving a billion daily active users may lie in leveraging King's mobile success alongside a revitalized lineup of core Xbox franchises. However, this ambitious target is set against a backdrop of community backlash to the recent layoffs and a history of setbacks for the company.
