Xbox is undergoing a significant restructure that includes approximately 3,200 layoffs, a move the company attributes to operating at lower margins compared to industry peers. CEO Asha Sharma has outlined a new vision for Xbox, stating a goal to "entertain more than a billion people each day and give everyone the opportunity to create and connect," and aiming for a return to growth in 2027.
This ambitious target, however, has drawn skepticism. With a global population of approximately 8.3 billion, achieving one billion daily active users would mean engaging nearly one-eighth of the world's population daily. While tech giants like Meta boast multi-billion daily active users across their ecosystems, and platforms like WeChat exceed a billion, Xbox's goal appears particularly challenging within the gaming industry.
As of 2023, the total number of gamers worldwide is estimated at 3.2 billion. Xbox's objective would require capturing roughly one-third of all gamers daily. The company's strategy to reach this goal likely encompasses its diverse portfolio, including consoles, PC gaming through Microsoft Windows, mobile titles via its acquisition of King (maker of Candy Crush), cloud gaming services, and even games available on competing platforms like PlayStation and Nintendo.
Examining Xbox's flagship franchises reveals the scale of the challenge. Call of Duty, a major property, sees tens of thousands of concurrent players on platforms like Steam, but even generous estimates do not approach the billion-user mark. The entire franchise has sold over 500 million copies historically, a number that falls far short of daily engagement targets when considering individual players. Minecraft, another key title, reported a record 3.9 million daily active users on PlayStation and Xbox following a movie release, with 140 million monthly active users in 2021 and over 400 million copies sold lifetime. Candy Crush, while downloaded over 3.6 billion times, reported around 26 million daily active users recently, a significant decrease from its 2015 peak of 327 million monthly active users.
Adding the user bases of other popular Xbox-linked games and services, such as Forza Horizon, Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, and World of Warcraft, helps bolster the potential numbers. However, even with optimistic aggregations, where each individual player is counted only once across all titles and platforms, reaching one billion daily active users requires significant multiplication of current engagement figures.
In 2025, Xbox reported 500 million monthly active users across all its services. To meet Sharma's daily goal, this number would need to effectively double, with every user engaging daily instead of monthly. This level of daily engagement is not met by competitors like PlayStation, which averages 125 million monthly active users, or Nintendo, which reports 128 million annually. Even broader entertainment services like Netflix have 325 million subscribers. Roblox, a platform often cited for its massive user base, reported 132 million daily active users, a fraction of Xbox's target.
