Xbox has officially launched its disc-to-digital program, making it available to all console owners after an initial rollout to Xbox Insiders. This initiative allows players to insert eligible physical game discs into their Xbox Series X or Xbox One console to receive a digital license for that game.
Once a qualifying disc is inserted, the console will automatically grant players a digital license, which in turn unlocks and downloads the digital version of the game into their library. The physical disc remains functional and usable after the digital license is acquired. The program aims to provide the benefits of digital ownership, such as cross-platform Play Anywhere access and cloud gaming capabilities, for players who own physical media.
Xbox's support pages clarify that these digital licenses are tied to the physical disc. Losing, selling, or otherwise parting with the qualifying disc may result in the loss of access to the associated digital license. Xbox has framed this program as part of its commitment to game preservation, stating that maintaining access to owned games is increasingly important as technology evolves. This move contrasts with PlayStation's announced plans to cease the production of physical game discs in 2028.
In other recent Xbox news, the company has undergone further workforce reductions, laying off 268 employees following earlier cuts of over 1,500 staff, which impacted Halo Studios. Development of the next Halo game has been transferred to Activision. Additionally, Xbox has taken on publishing duties for Hideo Kojima's action-espionage game, Physint, after the project was dropped by PlayStation.
