Xbox has officially rolled out its disc-to-digital program to all users, enabling players to convert the majority of their physical Xbox Series X and Xbox One game discs into digital licenses. This feature was previously available only to Xbox Insiders during a testing phase.
The process allows users to claim a digital license for a physical game they own. For example, inserting a physical copy of Injustice 2 into an Xbox Series X brought up a "Claim digital license" option within the game's app menu. Selecting this option converted the disc to a digital license, removing the need to use the disc for future play. Alternatively, simply playing a game can also automatically trigger the claim of its digital license.
For those who prefer not to have discs automatically install when inserted, Xbox's support page recommends navigating to Settings > Devices & connections > Disc and unchecking "Play disc automatically."
Not all games are eligible for conversion. Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles are not currently supported, and some publishers have not opted into the program. Sega and Ubisoft titles have recently been added, suggesting that other publishers, such as Square Enix, might join in the future. A fan-made list indicates that over 1400 games are compatible with the disc-to-digital program.
The disc-to-digital initiative is seen by many as a preparatory step for an increasingly digital future in gaming. With reports of Sony ceasing physical disc production for PlayStation games in 2028, it is widely anticipated that Xbox may follow a similar path with the next console generation. Despite physical discs still holding value for many collectors and long-time fans, digital sales have significantly outpaced physical ones in recent years.
It is important for users to retain their physical discs even after claiming a digital license. Selling or losing the disc could potentially result in the loss of the digital license, especially if it is redeemed by another user.
