Microsoft's disc-to-digital program for Xbox consoles is now officially live for all users, following an initial rollout to Xbox Insiders. This feature enables players to obtain digital licenses for a significant portion of their physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S game library.
To claim a digital license, users must insert a supported physical game disc into an Xbox console while logged into their account. A notification will appear, indicating that a digital license has been successfully claimed. This process can be completed on either an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console, even when converting Xbox Series X games.
While inserting a disc will automatically begin an installation, users can disable this behavior through the console's settings. Navigating to Profile & system, then Devices & connections, and selecting Disc allows users to uncheck "Play disc automatically." This setting adjustment can streamline the process of claiming licenses in bulk. With automatic playback disabled, users can manually select the game card on the console's home screen, press the Menu button, and then choose to claim the digital license. After completion, the disc can be ejected to proceed with the next game.
It is important to note that not all games are supported by the program, as publisher participation is required. Major publishers such as Square Enix and Ubisoft have not yet joined the initiative, which may limit its utility for those aiming to fully digitize their entire physical collection.
Once a digital license is acquired, the physical disc can still be lent to a friend. However, the recipient will then gain access to the digital license. Should the disc be returned, the original owner will regain the digital license after re-inserting it into their own console.
