Xbox is testing a new feature designed to encourage continued console use by tracking and displaying consecutive weekly engagement. Dubbed 'Streaks,' the functionality was first observed by journalist Stephen Totilo among Xbox Insiders.
The system displays a visual indicator on the Xbox dashboard and profile, showing checkmarks for days a user has actively used their console within a week. Maintaining a streak requires playing Xbox at least three days per week. Users who meet this threshold will see a flame symbol next to the indicator, accompanied by a count of consecutive weeks they have maintained the streak. The feature also shows progress toward continuing the current streak for the ongoing week.
Controversy Around Gamification
Streak systems are a common gamification tactic employed by various platforms to foster user retention. While often benign in applications like fitness trackers or educational tools, their implementation in gaming consoles has drawn criticism. Critics argue that such features can be manipulative, leveraging psychological principles to encourage compulsive behavior. This concern echoes broader discussions around tech companies designing products that may promote unhealthy usage patterns. Notably, Meta recently settled a lawsuit with 47 states over the alleged use of addictive features on Instagram and Facebook that contributed to mental harm among young users.
This development comes as Microsoft navigates a challenging period for its Xbox division. The company has undergone significant layoffs, with over 1,600 job cuts reported. Simultaneously, the gaming industry is facing declining console sales, partly attributed to rising hardware costs. In this context, Xbox appears to be exploring new avenues to drive user engagement and, consequently, revenue from its existing player base. The 'Streak' feature follows another recent UI update, the introduction of 'Mythic Achievements,' which reward players for achieving 100% completion in a game. Unlike streaks, Mythic Achievements are not time-sensitive and do not penalize players for periods of inactivity.
