Microsoft is set to introduce monthly hour caps for cloud streaming on Xbox Game Pass beginning in November. This change will apply even to the highest subscription tiers, affecting the unlimited cloud gaming access previously offered. The company indicated that these new limitations are being implemented to manage the growing costs associated with providing cloud gaming services as more users engage with the feature for longer durations.

According to Microsoft, the new limits are expected to impact approximately four percent of Game Pass subscribers. The tiered structure for cloud gaming hours will be as follows: Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will have a cap of 15 hours per month, Game Pass Premium will be limited to 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential will have a limit of 5 hours. Microsoft stated that these caps will allow the company to continue investing in the service's reliability and performance.

In conjunction with these limits, Microsoft plans to introduce an option for players to purchase additional cloud gaming hours on an hourly basis, even for those without a Game Pass subscription. Specific pricing and details for this pay-as-you-go option have not yet been disclosed but are expected to be shared in November. Microsoft explained that this metered approach aims to align costs with usage, preventing users who do not utilize cloud gaming from subsidizing those who use it extensively.

This adjustment comes as Microsoft continues to test a free, ad-supported tier for its cloud gaming service. Further information regarding pricing, purchasing additional hours, eligible games, market availability, and how players can monitor their remaining cloud gaming time will be provided by Microsoft in the coming month.
