Xbox Game Studios, once a prominent publishing label for Microsoft's first-party titles, appears to be significantly diminished following recent organizational changes and layoffs. The division, which now encompasses Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media and Activision Blizzard alongside Xbox Game Studios itself, has seen a substantial reduction in the number of studios directly operating under the Xbox Game Studios banner.
According to recent assessments, only four studios now officially fall under Xbox Game Studios: The Coalition (developer of Gears of War), inXile Entertainment (known for Wasteland and the upcoming Clockwork Revolution), Mojang Studios (creator of Minecraft), and Playground Games (responsible for Forza Horizon and the upcoming Fable).
This consolidation marks a departure from the brand's previous structure, where studios like Rare and World's Edge (developer of Age of Empires) were once part of Xbox Game Studios. Both Rare and World's Edge are now reportedly under Activision Blizzard. Additionally, while Halo Studios' formal organizational placement remains unclear, Activision is confirmed to be developing the next installment in the Halo franchise. Obsidian Entertainment, previously an Xbox studio, has been integrated into ZeniMax, which now oversees Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, MachineGames, ZeniMax Online Studios, and Obsidian.
The Activision Blizzard portfolio, aside from Call of Duty support studios and the team behind the next Halo game, includes major developers such as Blizzard Entertainment, Infinity Ward, King, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, and others. While all these development teams are technically part of the broader Xbox ecosystem, and Xbox will continue to publish titles from external partners like Kojima Productions, the distinct identity and role of the Xbox Game Studios publishing label itself have become ambiguous.
Evidence suggests a potential phasing out of the Xbox Game Studios branding. Since mid-2025, dedicated webpages and references to Xbox Game Studios have been absent from the official Xbox website. This contrasts sharply with PlayStation Studios, which maintains a distinct online presence and lists a significantly larger number of associated development studios. At its peak, Xbox Game Studios comprised over a dozen studios, but the current count under the direct banner has dwindled to four.
Despite the shrinking publisher label, Microsoft is focusing on key studios like Mojang, with The Coalition, inXile, and Playground Games all slated to release new titles within the next year. Xbox leadership has emphasized strengthening the brand through exclusive content. However, the diminishing role of the Xbox Game Studios publisher raises questions about what defines an "Xbox game" in the current landscape, a question likely to remain unresolved until Microsoft completes its ongoing internal restructuring.
