Microsoft has begun testing new features for Xbox Series X|S consoles with its Insider program, including a significant quality-of-life improvement for large game updates and an expansion of the allowed Gamertag length. The most notable change allows Xbox Game Pass subscribers to play titles that are currently downloading updates by streaming them via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Playing While Updating
Previously, games undergoing updates on Xbox consoles were unplayable until the download was complete. This often led to lengthy waits, particularly for large, high-fidelity AAA titles. The new system, detailed in an Xbox Wire post, allows players to launch and play an updating Game Pass title through cloud streaming if their internet connection is sufficient. This feature underscores Microsoft's continued investment in its cloud gaming infrastructure, even as it focuses on console hardware.
Gamertag and UI Enhancements
Beyond the cloud gaming update, the current Insider build also introduces an increase to the maximum Gamertag character limit. Microsoft had previously capped Gamertags at 12 characters in 2019, but this update raises that limit to 15 characters. The update also brings minor user interface refinements, such as the addition of achievement tracking for Xbox 360 games within their respective game hubs and a wishlist option for games not currently owned, which will appear on their game cards.
These features are initially available to Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring. Future rollouts will extend access to other Insider tiers before a general release to all Xbox Series X|S owners.
