Playground Games has shed light on how its ambitious Fable RPG managed to navigate a 10-year development cycle, a period marked by significant layoffs and studio closures across the wider Xbox ecosystem. Early stages of building the Fable team commenced in 2017, shortly after Microsoft shuttered Lionhead Studios, the original creators of the Fable series. Now, a decade later, the game is poised to launch into a drastically altered gaming landscape.
During Fable's lengthy development, Xbox's strategy involved acquiring studios such as Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory, only to later close or divest some of them. The Initiative, a studio formed with substantial investment for a new Perfect Dark title, was also eventually shut down after seven years with no released product. Microsoft's major acquisitions, including Bethesda for $7.5 billion and Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, further reshaped the industry.
These acquisitions were followed by multiple waves of layoffs. In January 2024, 1,900 jobs were cut, many from Activision Blizzard, with another 650 employees laid off later that year, leading to the closure of Arkane Austin. The previous year saw 9,000 staff departures from Microsoft as the company shifted focus to AI spending, impacting The Initiative, Turn 10, and Rare. This year's layoffs, under new Xbox head Asha Sharma, affected 3,200 workers and cast doubt on the future of Arkane Lyon.
Ralph Fulton, director of Fable, explained to The Guardian that the franchise's enduring appeal was key to its survival. He stated that Fable is considered "vital" to the Xbox platform and gaming as a whole, offering a unique combination of elements. Fulton believes that this perception of Fable as a core brand, alongside Halo, Forza, and Gears of War, has shielded it from the fates of other projects like the ultimately canceled Everwild. The continued success of Playground Games' Forza Horizon series also provided financial stability during Fable's extended development.
Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027.
