Xbox's recently implemented disc-to-digital feature, currently available to Xbox Insider program members, has revealed a hidden capability that could prove beneficial for certain players. The program allows users to digitize Xbox Series X game discs by leveraging an older Xbox One console.

Owners of an Xbox One can insert an Xbox Series X disc into their console. While the Xbox One cannot read the disc, it will recognize its presence. A message indicating the game's incompatibility will appear. After closing this message, players can navigate to the options menu and select "claim digital license." This action successfully assigns the game's digital version to the player's account, effectively digitizing an Xbox Series X game on an Xbox One.

This process enables players to acquire digital licenses for Series X games without direct access to the current-generation console. This workaround is particularly useful for those who own the digital-only Xbox Series S but wish to take advantage of physical game ownership. Physical games often present a more economical option due to retailer discounts and the secondhand market. While consoles with disc drives are typically more expensive, the availability of physical media remains a key reason many players still favor consoles like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 over their digital counterparts.

With the disc-to-digital program and this unexpected Xbox One functionality, players can now acquire physical current-generation games and play them on the more affordable Series S. The requirement of having access to an Xbox One to perform the digitization means that players can still enjoy the benefits of physical media, even if they primarily use a digital-only console. This also allows players to keep physical games received as gifts and to continue utilizing the secondhand market for purchases. Additionally, the program can preserve access to games that have been delisted from the Xbox Store, preventing them from becoming inaccessible.
