Xbox's online services are currently experiencing a major outage, preventing many players from accessing their digital and physical game libraries. The issues began to emerge on the Xbox subreddit and were later confirmed by the official Xbox support account on X (formerly Twitter), stating that some users were encountering errors when attempting to sign in, view their game library, or launch games. The Xbox live status page indicates that 'account & profile', 'store & subscriptions', 'games & gaming', and 'apps & mobile' services are all down.

This widespread disruption means that users may struggle to sign in, browse the store, or launch games, including those from disc and backwards-compatible titles. The Xbox mobile app functionality is also reportedly affected. While some core online infrastructure, such as multiplayer and cloud gaming, may remain untouched according to the status page, the inability to launch games renders the console largely unusable for its primary functions for affected users.

This incident follows a similar outage on the PlayStation Network just last week, amplifying community concerns regarding the implications of an all-digital future and digital rights management (DRM). Players have expressed frustration on social media, with many questioning why an online service outage would prevent them from playing games they own offline. Comments on the Xbox subreddit highlighted sentiments such as "Can someone please explain why a SERVER outage means I can't play ANY of my games LOCALLY OFFLINE?" and "None of my digital games work. That no physical future looking pretty dark."

Engineers are currently working on resolving the outage, though the duration of the fix remains unknown. The situation is particularly ill-timed for Microsoft, occurring amidst ongoing efforts to revitalize its gaming brand and following recent layoffs across its gaming division. Eurogamer has reached out to Xbox for further comment on the ongoing outage.
