Yacht Club Games has confirmed that most of its development team is now focused on a new 3D game, a project that comes after the successful launch of their critically acclaimed title, Mina the Hollower. The studio had described Mina the Hollower as a "make-or-break" moment due to earlier financial pressures, including the impact of a global pandemic and an unsuccessful attempt to diversify into multiple projects simultaneously.
According to a recent Reddit AMA, Mina the Hollower's sales have been sufficient to provide the studio with financial stability. Sean Velasco stated that the game has secured financial stability "for now." Mina the Hollower reportedly sold over 500,000 copies within its first two weeks of release, putting it on track toward the developer's initial goal of one million units sold.
While the team is not yet ready to discuss potential DLC or follow-up content for Mina the Hollower, they have stated that post-release features are in development. These planned additions include expanded randomizer options, randomization for enemies and bosses, additional modifiers, and features specifically for speedrunners.
The new 3D game, which has been speculated to be a 3D entry in the Shovel Knight series, is reportedly halfway complete, according to prior comments from Velasco to Bloomberg. While not officially confirmed, Alec Faulkner indicated that "most of us are currently working on a 3D game, yes!" adding that it "gonna be soooooooo awesome."
Studio co-founder Nick Wozniac reflected on the developer's recent cycle, emphasizing the importance of keeping the team focused. He noted that splitting the team to work on multiple games had been a mistake that could have been corrected sooner, and that the current cohesive approach was instrumental to Mina the Hollower's success. He added that the company is learning from these experiences to drive future development.
