Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has broken his silence on the abrupt cancellation of the Disney+ series "Wonder Man," a decision that comes just months after the show received a season two renewal and an Emmy nomination for his performance. Abdul-Mateen shared his thoughts via Instagram, confirming earlier reports of Marvel's reversal on the series' continuation without elaborating on the specific reasons behind the change.

The series, which premiered in January to critical acclaim, centered on Abdul-Mateen as a struggling actor named Simon and Sir Ben Kingsley as the veteran Marvel character Trevor Slattery. It was described as a buddy comedy that explored their lives in Hollywood. Despite initial fan concern about viewership, the show was renewed for a second season in March, reportedly due to its relatively lower production cost compared to other Marvel television projects.

"Word just dropped that Wonder Man won't be coming back for Season 2," Abdul-Mateen wrote. "That's life, right? Everything will shake out. I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other. The show worked. And that's my favorite thing about it."

He continued by acknowledging the show's impact on viewers, noting their reactions and messages that indicated the series provided encouragement. Abdul-Mateen also expressed pride in the project, concluding his message with, "I'm glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS."

Showrunner Andrew Guest also commented on the cancellation, expressing pride in the work produced and gratitude towards the cast and crew, including director Destin Daniel Cretton, Abdul-Mateen, and Kingsley. He also thanked the viewers and critics who supported the series.

The cancellation of "Wonder Man" occurs amidst broader cost-cutting measures at Disney+. Beyond "Vision Quest" and "Daredevil: Born Again Season 3," which are already in post-production, Marvel has no further live-action television series officially announced as greenlit. Similarly, Disney's Star Wars division has no confirmed upcoming series following the completion of filming for "Ahsoka Season 2."
