Larian Studios' official Baldur's Gate 3 stream was abruptly ended on YouTube due to "Body Exposure and Sexualized Behaviors," a content moderation issue that has previously affected the developer. The incident occurred during a broadcast featuring the game's "Dark Urge" playthrough.
While Larian has been conducting weekly streams of this playthrough on both Twitch and YouTube for several months, the August 5 broadcast on YouTube was not saved as a Video on Demand (VOD). Viewers could still access the stream on the studio's Twitch channel, but the YouTube version disappeared. The apparent cause for the shutdown was a sex scene involving the player character and the incubus Haarlep, a form taken by the devil Raphael. Although Larian attempted to obscure explicit elements with a graphic of a D20 die, the nudity and sexual content were evidently visible enough to trigger YouTube's content restrictions.
This is not the first time Baldur's Gate 3's intimate scenes have caused issues for Larian. Prior to the game's launch, a notable encounter with the bear character Halsin resulted in the studio being temporarily banned from streaming on TikTok. The developer appears to be handling the YouTube interruption with a degree of levity, expressing hope that Twitch will not follow suit, which would jeopardize the continuation of their Dark Urge playthrough streams.
In 2023, Larian shared insights into the creation of the Haarlep sex scene with Kotaku, noting its complexity. Performance director Greg Lidstone described it as one of the game's more straightforward romantic encounters, but one that required significant preparation during motion capture sessions with the help of intimacy coordinators. Lidstone stated that the scene was "very physical and probably closest to a traditional live-action sex scene and required the most discussion beforehand," emphasizing the need for a closed set and clear communication to ensure comfort among all participants.
