During the Roblox Developers Conference keynote address, a YouTuber identified as Emathiio interrupted CEO David Baszucki's presentation to protest the company's approach to child safety. The incident occurred as Baszucki was speaking, with Emathiio running onto the stage and shouting, "we deserve better." He was quickly apprehended by security personnel and stage staff.
Following the disruption, Emathiio released a YouTube video explaining his actions, stating his intent was to give a voice to children affected by issues on the platform who cannot speak for themselves at events like the conference. He acknowledged that his protest might be labeled as seeking attention but maintained that his goal was to express long-held concerns about child safety and the pace of progress.
Roblox is currently under investigation by the U.S. Senate regarding the safety measures in place to protect minors on its platform and to prevent exploitation. The company has implemented enhanced parent controls and age-gating features in response to these concerns. However, ongoing litigation from parents and several states continues to highlight the child safety issues.
Previous statements from Roblox executives have also drawn scrutiny. In a 2025 interview on The New York Times Hard Fork podcast, Baszucki appeared to downplay child safety criticisms and reportedly considered the idea of introducing gambling markets into Roblox as "brilliant." Separately, a Roblox parent advocate, Dr. Elizabeth Milovidov, was reported to have suggested in an interview that parents bear a greater responsibility for preventing their children from encountering predators on the platform.
Adding to the controversy is a wrongful death lawsuit filed over the suicide of a 13-year-old user. Roblox has sought to move this case to arbitration, arguing that the user's actions, including account creation, accepting terms of service updates, using gift cards, and purchasing virtual currency, constitute an agreement to arbitration. Emathiio's protest, amplified by his public statement, brings renewed attention to these ongoing child safety debates surrounding the popular gaming platform.
