An independent game developer, known as "chicanogoth" on Instagram, is gaining significant attention for their fan-made video game adaptation of Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie. The project, humorously dubbed Resident Evil: The Movie: The Game, meticulously recreates scenes from the film using the fixed camera angles and polygonal art style reminiscent of the original PlayStation 1 Resident Evil titles.
Recent footage shared by the developer showcases the player character, Bryan Hodukavich, fleeing from an infected Doberman Pinscher. The scene features a recreation of a crashed police cruiser, its lights flashing against the snow, mirroring a sequence from the movie. This dedication to capturing the feel of early Resident Evil games, with their distinctive camera perspectives and slightly blocky character models, has resonated with players.
Commenters have expressed enthusiasm for the project, with some playfully suggesting that the protagonist's notoriously poor aim from the film should be incorporated into the gameplay mechanics. Others have offered their services for voice acting.
Further updates from chicanogoth on October 19 revealed death and injury animations for the player character, many sourced from animation libraries. The developer also noted that the infected dog model was inspired by the Cerberus from Resident Evil 2 and teased an opening cinematic sequence depicting the aftermath of the police car crash.
"This has been a fun project to work on and I’m adding things little by little!" the developer stated. "This is the first game I’ve actually spent time on developing, and it’s been a learning process. Thank you all for your interest and encouragement to work on this project I primarily wanted for myself haha. More to come!"
This project follows another viral Resident Evil fan creation: a short film by actor Chandler Riggs, known for his role in The Walking Dead, which adapted Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. That film even received praise from Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi.
Cregger's Resident Evil movie has achieved considerable commercial success, grossing over $360 million worldwide and ranking as the 10th highest-grossing video game movie adaptation ever. While the prospect of a sequel remains uncertain, the film's impact is evident in the continued surge of fan-made content celebrating the franchise.
