Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Dwarfs Original N64 Version in File Size

Players preparing to revisit Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's upcoming remake for the Nintendo Switch 2 will need to allocate a significant amount of storage space. The remake's file size has been confirmed at 27 GB, a substantial increase from the original Nintendo 64 version which fit onto a 32 MB cartridge.

This 27 GB requirement positions the Ocarina of Time remake as the largest mainline entry in The Legend of Zelda series. For comparison, the most recent mainline installment, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, occupies 24 GB on the Switch 2. The only Zelda-adjacent title that exceeds the remake's storage needs is the 2025 Musou spinoff, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which requires just over 43 GB.

While 27 GB is not considered large by modern gaming standards, where titles like Call of Duty can demand over 200 GB, it is a notable expansion for a Zelda game. The increased file size is attributed to the remake's revamped art style and expanded game world, features that have drawn both praise and controversy.

The Ocarina of Time remake is set to launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5. Alongside updated visuals, the remake introduces new gameplay mechanics, including the ability to jump on command. Early hands-on impressions suggest the game successfully modernizes the beloved classic while retaining its timeless appeal. Polygon's preview noted that the remake is "both incredibly impressive graphically and the game now plays better than ever," evoking nostalgia while feeling thoroughly modern.
