Zenonia, a mobile action RPG that predates the widespread adoption of smartphones, has been released on PC, allowing players to experience a title that once demonstrated the potential of gaming on feature phones. Originally developed and published by Gamevil, the game first launched in South Korea in 2008 before making its way to the US App Store in 2009 and the Google Play Store in 2010. It later received ports for the Nintendo DSi and PlayStation Portable.
The PC version offers an updated control scheme, replacing the on-screen D-pad of its mobile origins with support for keyboards and controllers. At its core, Zenonia retains the rapid, overhead action gameplay that defined its original release. Players can choose from three distinct classes—Paladin, Warrior, and Assassin—each featuring its own skill tree, and further customize their character through a wide array of weapons.
Graphically, Zenonia 1 draws comparisons to early 2D Zelda titles, presenting a visual style reminiscent of an upgraded version of A Link to the Past. The protagonist, Regret, is depicted with spiky blond hair and wields a large greatsword, embodying a typical RPG hero on a quest to uncover the truth behind his adoptive father's demise.
A standout feature of Zenonia is its dynamic alignment system, which allows player decisions to influence Regret's moral standing, steering him toward a "good" or "evil" path. Completing side quests for non-player characters, for instance, can shift the alignment towards "good." Beyond this narrative choice, players must also manage Regret's physical needs, as hunger can impact his SP (stamina points), and excessive armor can impede movement speed.
A full playthrough of Zenonia 1 is estimated to take between 15 to 30 hours, with its real-time combat, emphasis on exploration, and engaging dialogue contributing to its playtime. This new PC release marks the first time Zenonia 1 is officially available on Windows.
