Zero Escape Creator's New Studio Faces Uncertain Future After Game Cancellation

Kotaro Uchikoshi, the creative force behind the cult classic Zero Escape series and The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, has revealed that his new development studio, Crash Keys, is in a precarious situation due to the sudden cancellation of its inaugural game.

Uchikoshi announced the cancellation via social media, stating that the project had been in development for approximately a year and a half and that the entire team had "poured our hearts and souls" into it. He described the cancellation as a "bolt from the blue" that resulted in him losing his job overnight. The studio, which officially opened in March 2025, was planning a formal reveal of its first title next year, but the unexpected turn of events has forced Uchikoshi to seek external support sooner than anticipated.

Crash Keys is now actively looking for potential collaborators and investors. Uchikoshi humorously cautioned that without assistance, the studio might "literally crash into a million pieces," with the team potentially surviving on "cicada shells collected from a run-down park." He urged anyone interested in working with them or investing in their projects to reach out, emphasizing that "You're our only hope!"

The Crash Keys website currently lists only two other employees besides Uchikoshi: writer Akira Mine, who has credits on The Hundred Line and the upcoming Danganronpa 2x2, and Muri Sasaki, who contributed to both Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files. The studio's name itself has drawn attention from fans, as "Crash Keys" is a significant organization within the Zero Escape narrative.

Following his work on the Zero Escape series, Uchikoshi co-founded TooKyo Games with Kazutaka Kodaka, the creator of Danganronpa. Together, they released the strategy game The Hundred Line last year. It remains unclear if Uchikoshi maintains any involvement with TooKyo Games.
