The five most impactful upgrades for the Jackdaw are the Armored Hull, Mortar, Round and Heated Shot, Bow Chasers, and Ram. These offer a robust mix of survivability and offensive power, with the Ram providing an aggressive option for closing the distance.
Armored Hull
The Armored Hull upgrade is available from the start, but its later tiers significantly increase the Jackdaw's damage resistance, from 800 to 1,800. While expensive, these improvements are vital for surviving prolonged engagements. The ultimate tier requires the Hull Armor Ultimate Plan, found in a chest within the San Ignacio Shipwreck. Accessing this chest requires the Diving Bell.
Mortars
Mortars provide a powerful long-range bombardment option, capable of dealing significant damage from a distance. While the targeting can take some getting used to, their impact in naval battles is undeniable. The Mortar Ultimate Plan is located in a treasure chest within the Antocha Wreck. Additionally, investing in Mortar Storage upgrades is recommended for sustained bombardment. The Mortar Storage Ultimate Plan is found on land in Matanzas.
Round and Heated Shot
As the Jackdaw's primary broadside weaponry, Round and Heated Shot upgrades are essential for consistent damage output. While Heavy Shot is an alternative, these upgrades offer a reliable way to weaken enemy ships. Further enhancements allow for additional broadside weapons to be equipped. The Round Shot Strength Ultimate Plan can be found in a chest within the Kabah Ruins Shipwreck.
Bow Chasers
These chain-linked shots are fired from the Jackdaw's bow cannons and are particularly effective at incapacitating enemy sails. This makes them invaluable for preventing fleeing targets from escaping, a common challenge when preparing to board. Unlike some other upgrades, the highest tier of Bow Chasers does not require finding a specific Ultimate Plan.
Ram
The Ram upgrade offers a high-risk, high-reward option for dealing significant damage by colliding with enemy ships. When used strategically to close the distance, a well-timed ram can be the finishing blow before boarding. The Ram Ultimate Plan is located in the La Concepcion Wreck.
Unlocking higher tiers for many of these upgrades, particularly beyond Tier II, requires advancements in the Harbormaster's level. This is tied to liberating Great Inagua island during the Sequence 3 mission "A Single Madman," which grants control of the Great Inagua Hideout and the ability to upgrade the Harbormaster.
