Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Relationship Guide

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers a relationship system that allows players to deepen their bonds with party members, unlocking various rewards and insights into their backstories. While the concept may echo friendship events in titles like Persona 5 or Stardew Valley, Expedition 33 places less emphasis on making specific choices at the right time. Instead, completing relationship events promptly is encouraged primarily for the rewards they grant, and choosing to pursue a relationship with one character does not prevent you from interacting with others.

Understanding Relationships and Romance

Once players reach Act 2 and Verso joins the party, opportunities to spend time with allies at Camp will arise. Engaging with these opportunities increases a character's Relationship Level, which progresses from Level 1 to Level 7. These events typically occur after significant story moments, so it is advisable to speak with every party member at Camp following major plot developments. Early Relationship Levels reveal character backstories, while higher levels unlock new Gradient Attacks, cosmetic items, and records. Companion quests become available at higher Relationship Levels, offering further character development and unique challenges.

In Expedition 33, relationships and romance are distinct. Players can raise their Relationship Levels with all party members, but romance is exclusively an option with either Lune or Sciel, not both. Acknowledging this exclusivity does not negatively impact relationships with other characters, and maximum Relationship Levels can still be achieved platonically, ensuring access to all unique Gradient Attacks.

Companion Quests

Most companions in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offer personal quests upon reaching Relationship Level 5. Sciel is the sole exception, as no specific quest is tied to her. These quests generally involve traveling to a designated location and facing a boss encounter. While there is no strict time limit for completion, finishing them is necessary to reach Relationship Level 6.

Lune's quest directs players to Sirene's Dress Realm to face a Chromatic version of the Glissando boss. Monoco's quest requires a trip north of Monoco's Station to the Sacred River for a rematch with Golgra. Esquie's quest involves returning to Esquie's Nest for another battle against Francois. Maelle's quest, which contains spoilers, unlocks a new area west of Visages and concludes with a one-on-one fight against Maelle herself.

Pursuing Romance

Romance options become available upon reaching specific Relationship Levels. Players can initiate a romantic path with Lune at Relationship Level 6, or with Sciel at Relationship Level 3, but not with both. To romance Lune, after reaching Level 6 and choosing to spend time with her, select the dialogue option: "Sure. I'd love to help with 'your song.'" This will trigger a romantic scene and max out her Relationship Level.

To romance Sciel, upon reaching Relationship Level 3 and spending time with her to reach Level 4, respond to her favor request with "Do you even need to ask." Later, between Levels 5 and 6, choose to "go for a swim" with Sciel to progress the romance.

It is important to note that even without pursuing romance, players can still achieve maximum Relationship Levels with both Lune and Sciel, thereby unlocking their unique Gradient Attacks and associated records or cosmetic items. The romantic scenes serve as exclusive narrative content rather than providing gameplay advantages.
