The Emissary quest in Valor Mortis presents a significant roadblock for players who encounter it shortly after crossing the bridge into the Valley of Ashes and reaching the army camp. While players can find the seal of an emissary from Bonaparte within an abandoned carriage, the quest's progression is halted by poisonous gas clouds that infest the camp.
The key to overcoming this obstacle lies in acquiring the Shield Transmutation ability. This crucial transmutation is not available early in the game; it is unlocked much later, specifically when players visit the university in the city. The Valley of Ashes represents the second area of Valor Mortis, whereas the university is located in the ninth area. This considerable progression gap means players must advance significantly through the game before they can return to complete "The Emissary" quest.
Once the Shield Transmutation ability has been obtained, players can use it to safely traverse the poison clouds. After navigating through the camp, players will need to interact with an unusual corpse, which triggers a miniboss encounter. Upon defeating the miniboss, a chest will become available. Opening this chest rewards players with the Perfect Copy amber, an item that enhances the ranks of all equipped Tier 1 and Tier 2 ambers.
