The Happy Mask Shop quest in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time involves selling masks to various characters across Hyrule. While potentially lucrative, the quest requires careful attention to customer locations and sometimes footing the bill for the masks yourself. Successfully completing it can yield significant rupees and unlock unique dialogue.

Starting the Quest

To begin, visit the Happy Mask Shop located in Hyrule Castle Town. The shop is only open during the daytime and can be accessed once Young Link has met Princess Zelda and delivered her letter to the Death Mountain gatekeeper. Upon speaking with the salesman, he will offer Link the Keaton Mask, marking the start of the quest. Each subsequent mask requires a purchase from the salesman, and Link must often pay the difference if the customer's offer is less than the mask's cost.

The Keaton Mask

The Keaton Mask is intended for the Death Mountain gatekeeper's child. After speaking with the gatekeeper about the Hylian Shield, he will express a desire for this mask. Return to him, equip the Keaton Mask, and speak to him. He will purchase it for 15 rupees. After this sale, return to the Happy Mask Shop and pay the salesman 10 rupees for the next mask.

The Skull Mask

Next, the salesman offers the Skull Mask, which has a going rate of 20 rupees. The customer for this mask is the Skull Kid, found in the Lost Woods. To reach him, enter the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest and immediately turn left into his clearing. Equip the Skull Mask, stand on the small stump, and target the Skull Kid. He will offer 10 rupees for the mask. Link will need to cover the remaining 10 rupees for the salesman's fee.

The Spooky Mask

After paying the fee for the Skull Mask, Link can acquire the Spooky Mask, which sells for 30 rupees. This mask is sought after by a child in Kakariko Village's graveyard. This child can be found near the graveyard entrance shortly after sunrise. He will purchase the Spooky Mask for 50 rupees, allowing Link to make a 20-rupee profit and cover the salesman's fee without spending his own rupees. The salesman then provides the Bunny Hood, priced at 50 rupees.

The Bunny Hood

The Bunny Hood can only be sold after Link has obtained all three Spiritual Stones, meaning the completion of Dodongo's Cavern and Jabu-Jabu's Belly. The customer is the postman, who can be found running a circuit around Hyrule Field, looping near Lon-Lon Ranch. Equip the Bunny Hood and catch up to him. He will offer 200 rupees for it, resulting in a 150-rupee profit. After paying the salesman his 50 rupees, Link can choose one of four masks: the Goron Mask, Zora Mask, Gerudo Mask, or the Mask of Truth.

The Mask of Truth and Other Masks

While the Goron, Zora, and Gerudo masks offer unique dialogue snippets with certain NPCs, they do not unlock any further quests or secrets. The Mask of Truth, however, provides access to hidden information. Wearing it allows Link to receive messages from Gossip Stones, understand the thoughts of NPCs, and even hear the thoughts of animals, such as the cow found in a hole on Death Mountain.
