Unlocking the secret ending, also known as the true ending, in Phantom Blade Zero requires players to meticulously complete a series of optional story quests scattered throughout the game. These quests build upon an overarching narrative focused on uncovering the Secrets at the Heart of the Lake, understanding the Herald's Illusion, and deciphering Inanis's role. It is crucial to complete these tasks before reaching the game's point of no return, the Mirage Estate.
Navigating the Point of No Return
After completing the main mission in Pangzhen, players will learn of the necessity to visit the Mirage Estate. Access is not straightforward, as the primary path is blocked. The quest then shifts to "The Four Serpent Houses," revealing a hidden passage behind a snake door in the Green Serpent House. After gathering the required items to open this passage, players can proceed to the Mirage Estate. It is vital to note that upon approaching the Mirage Estate, the game will warn of "unfinished business" if any important quests remain incomplete. While players can still fast travel to other regions, prematurely entering the Mirage Estate can invalidate the requirements for the true ending.
Essential Early-Game and Overarching Quests
Several early-game quests are instrumental in unlocking the true ending. These include "Deep in the Valley," "Crimson Manor," "Bloodline Awakening/Long Pillars," and "Quick Hand Zhang Treasures." "Deep in the Valley" provides access to the lower section of the initial region, leading to the Crimson Manor and Long Pillar. "Quick Hand Zhang" involves collecting relics from various hideout locations. Completing these tasks early ensures that the player is on the correct path toward the secret ending.
The Heart of the Lake and Its Secrets
The "Secrets at the Heart of the Lake" is a significant overarching quest that begins in the Village of Lu. Players must first collect six Firefly's Memory Flowers found throughout the village. These flowers grant access to an optional area near the Temple of the Blue Fireflies. Here, players must defeat a boss named Dusk, the Puppeteer, to receive rewards and trigger a cutscene. Interacting with an acolyte or scarecrow in the nearby farm fields will reveal that this objective is part of a larger, optional questline.
Exploration in other regions will uncover further crucial quests, such as "Illusion of Inanis" and "Sha-Chi-Powered Boat," which leads to Meigu Lake. Quests like "Whence the Weeping" and "Pillars of Kunlun" are acquired a few hours into the campaign and are completed after clearing the Mountain of Imprisonment. Additionally, collecting items like the Illusory Pipa is necessary to dispel barriers and open new areas, while "The Herald's Illusion" involves locating the domains of the Three-Eyed Puppet. Acquiring all Acolyte Masks is also essential, as these items unlock a secret area. Completing these specific tasks rewards players with two Crystal Puppet Eye items: Yin and Yang.
Meigu Lake and Inanis's Realm
The Acolyte Masks are used to shatter the Four Guardians' Mirror, a mystical location within the frozen lands of northwestern Meigu Lake. Exploring the Discordance realm within Meigu Lake will yield additional loot. At the end of this area, players must defeat the Blizzard Blademaster. After this victory, an ominous statue appears. Interacting with this statue and placing the two Crystal Puppet Eyes will transport the player to the Heart of the Lake. Here, players must defeat cultists to halt their ritual, leading to another encounter with Inanis and concluding the "Secrets of the Heart of the Lake" questline.
Mirage Estate and Soulrend Cliff
To achieve the secret ending, all non-main story quests, indicated by a purple icon, must be completed before entering the Mirage Estate. Upon entering the Mirage Estate, certain areas, like the eastern part of the Crimson Forest, will transform and become covered in snow. Players must progress through the Mirage Estate, defeating enemies and bosses, and collecting loot. Within the estate grounds, players must complete the fifth and final Long Pillar for "Bloodline Awakening" and find another hideout for "Quick Hand's Request." Later, players will acquire the Tiger Cannon, a Phantom Edge capable of destroying destructible walls, which is necessary to reach Soulrend Cliff, the game's final region.
Soulrend Cliff presents numerous enemies, bosses, and rewards. Following the defeat of what appears to be the final boss, an additional encounter will take place. After vanquishing this final opponent, players can witness the concluding cutscenes, which reveal Inanis's true intentions. It is important to note that players can still fast travel to other locations while within the Mirage Estate and before activating the final bell in Soulrend Cliff. Players may also find additional valuable items, such as Soul Temper materials for weapon upgrades, and should consider battling the Three-Faced Puppet as part of the "Triple Threat" quest. After completing the game, players can also engage in "66 Days Mode" for further challenges.
