Trollweed stands as one of the most enigmatic items in Mortal Shell 2, obtainable early in the game but with a purpose shrouded in mystery throughout the player's journey. Its true function, hinted at in its item description, can only be fully understood after acquiring an astonishing 999 units.
Locating Trollweed
Players can find two instances of Trollweed within a single playthrough. The first is located in the Prologue, found as a glowing item on the ground at the back of the starting hut. It's easily missed if players depart the initial area too quickly.
The second Trollweed is situated in the Marrow Keep. Upon entering the Beacon Room, players must look towards the ceiling and shoot a barely visible glowing orb within a portal. This action will cause the Trollweed to fall.
The Enigmatic Description
In the inventory, Trollweed is described as 'A rare plant of dubious use. It's often confused for a far more potent variety.' Both its active and passive familiar effects initially yield no discernible results, with the description cryptically stating to 'Find 999 more to reveal further details about this item.'
Unveiling Trollweed's True Power
Given that only two Trollweeds are available per playthrough, reaching the 999-unit threshold necessitates completing 999 subsequent runs in New Game+. This demanding requirement means that the full effects of Trollweed have primarily been discovered through the use of cheat tools by some players.
Upon reaching maximum Trollweed familiarity, two powerful effects are unlocked. The active effect allows the player to transform into a bush, rendering them immobile but immune to enemy attacks. Alternatively, the passive effect grants total immunity to all enemy damage. These potent, albeit conditional, benefits reveal Trollweed to be a deliberately 'troll' item, living up to its name with its unusual and demanding activation requirement.
