Coal is a vital resource in Palworld, necessary for crafting high-tier items such as carbon fiber and refined metal ingots. These materials are essential for producing advanced technology, including high-tier spheres and weaponry.
Unlocking Coal Production
Players can unlock a placeable mining site for coal once they reach level 53. This technology costs five Ancient Technology Points to unlock and requires 70 Stone, 30 Paldium Fragments, 10 Ancient Civilization Parts, and 100 coal to construct. Once built at a player's base, it allows mining Pals to harvest an unlimited supply of coal.
Prime Coal Farming Locations
While a dedicated mining site provides a steady supply, players must first gather coal from natural deposits. The Twilight Dunes desert, located near the center of the map, is often cited as the easiest place to find coal. Look for large black rocks that are distinct from regular stone nodes and ore nodes due to their darker, more monochromatic appearance. Any pickaxe can mine coal, but a metal pickaxe, which requires 15 Stone, 20 Wood, and 15 Ingots, will significantly speed up the process. Because the desert has few teleportation points, establishing a secondary Palbox near farming areas can facilitate easier transport of gathered resources back to a main base.
Mount Obsidian also contains coal deposits, but it is a more dangerous region. Safer and more accessible farming areas include the Twilight Dunes, Verdant Brook, and Sand Dunes regions.
Twilight Dunes
The Twilight Dunes area offers several promising spots. One location at coordinates (-157, -92) features five closely grouped coal nodes, though the Alpha Pal boss Anubis can sometimes be found nearby. Another area, situated atop a rock formation at (-97, -120), provides relative safety from base raids and also contains five coal nodes. A third farming spot can be found behind the Anubis statue at (-124, -84), where six coal nodes are located.
Verdant Brook
In the Verdant Brook region, a flying mount is highly recommended for efficient coal gathering. The best location here is at coordinates (189, -40), which not only has eight coal nodes but also an additional eight ore nodes, aiding in sphere production. A second location at (290, -20) offers seven coal nodes, with seven more ore nodes located a short trek to the east.
Sand Dunes
The Sand Dunes also present multiple coal farming opportunities. West of the Deep Sand Dunes statue, at coordinates (436, 528), players can find six coal nodes near the region's edge. Southeast of the Frozen Dune Cape statue, atop a mountain near a cluster of trees, are nine coal nodes at coordinates (257, 543). Finally, southwest of the Deep Sand Dunes statue, at coordinates (438, 431), six more coal nodes can be mined.
Crafting with Coal
Coal is instrumental in creating refined ingots and carbon fiber. Two coal and two ore are smelted in an improved furnace to produce one refined ingot. The improved furnace itself requires 100 Stone, 30 Cement, 15 Flame Organs, and 5 Cryo-Coolant. Refined ingots are essential for advanced gear and items, including rifle ammo, shotgun shells, refined metal armor, and various tools like pickaxes and axes. Additionally, two coal combined with one Flame Organ can be processed into carbon fiber at a production assembly line. This component is used in crafting items such as the Giga Glider and the Assault Rifle.
