The early game in Phantom Blade Zero can be significantly eased by equipping the Jagged Steel sword, the reward for defeating the game's first boss. This weapon's central mechanic, Blood Blade, provides a stackable buff that enhances bleed buildup and damage. As the weapon levels up, its abilities become more potent. At level five, a special attack against guard-broken enemies grants a Blood Blade stack. Further upgrades at levels 10, 15, and 20 continuously increase bleed buildup, with a notable upgrade at level 15 allowing players to charge a slash to pre-emptively build stacks before unleashing them.
The sword's powered-up left trigger combo rapidly applies bleed buildup, offering a consistent way to trigger the status effect. Many of Phantom Blade Zero's human bosses are susceptible to bleed, making Jagged Steel particularly effective in the early stages of the game. However, certain enemy types, such as Puppets, Golden Bodies, and Phantom Bodies, are initially immune to bleed.
This limitation can be overcome by acquiring the Livingwood Talisman, found in a chest near the Smuggler's Tunnel in the Village of Lu. This accessory allows bleed to affect all enemy types, albeit at 50% effectiveness. Polishing the talisman can further increase this effectiveness to 70%. This makes Jagged Steel a universally powerful weapon capable of inflicting bleed on nearly every enemy and boss encountered throughout the game. Even after 30 hours of gameplay and experimentation with other weapons, the Jagged Steel remains a formidable choice due to its strong offensive capabilities.
