Phasmophobia's cursed possessions are potent supernatural artifacts that offer unique abilities to assist investigators, but they come with significant risks. These items, which include the Monkey Paw, Voodoo Doll, Ouija Board, Music Box, Haunted Mirror, Summoning Circle, and Tarot Cards, can only be used within an investigation area. While not mandatory, they can be invaluable for identifying elusive ghosts or succeeding at higher difficulty levels. However, their use can trigger cursed hunts, drain sanity, obscure senses, and even lead to death.
Understanding Each Cursed Possession
The Monkey Paw grants wishes, with each successful request curling one of its fingers. The number of available wishes decreases with higher difficulty levels. Once all fingers are curled, the paw can no longer be used. While wishes can be made via voice or text chat, each can only be fulfilled once.
The Voodoo Doll features 10 pins, each representing an interaction that prompts the ghost to manifest. Using it can help locate shy ghosts and gather evidence. However, each pin pushed into the doll reduces the user's sanity by 5%, with a critical pin causing a cursed hunt and using all remaining pins. Using the doll with 0% sanity also triggers a cursed hunt.
The Ouija Board facilitates direct communication with the ghost. After placing the board and activating it, players can ask questions via voice or text. A planchette moves to indicate 'Yes,' 'No,' or spell out responses. Each recognized question drains sanity, with more pertinent inquiries causing a greater loss. Crucially, players must say or select "Goodbye" upon finishing to safely deactivate the board; failure to do so, or running out of sanity while asking a question, can trigger a cursed hunt.
The Music Box plays a tune that attracts the ghost. If the ghost is within 20 meters, it will begin singing, guiding investigators to its location. At a five-meter range, the ghost may manifest, allowing for photos or videos. However, using the Music Box is risky. A cursed hunt can be triggered if the user has 0% sanity, drops the box while music is playing, or if the ghost remains within one meter for extended periods. Players within three meters of an active box also suffer continuous sanity drain.
The Haunted Mirror reveals the ghost's favorite room through a blurry, panning feed. While useful for pinpointing the ghost's location, especially on larger maps, each use decreases sanity by at least 7.5% per second. Using the mirror with less than 20% sanity, or reaching 0% sanity while using it, can cause it to break and trigger a cursed hunt.
The Summoning Circle allows players to physically summon the ghost for a brief period, ideal for capturing media. This item requires a lighter and a sanity level above 80%. Lighting each of the five candles drains 16% sanity. The ghost appears trapped within the circle for five seconds before a hunt begins. Attempting to use the circle during an active hunt will result in instant death.
Tarot Cards offer a gamble with 10 unique card effects, ranging from beneficial to detrimental. Each deck contains 10 randomly generated cards, meaning duplicates are possible. While some negative effects can be mitigated, certain cards, like The Hanged Man, can result in instant death.
