Romance in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt offers a variety of paths, from fleeting encounters to lasting relationships. The game distinguishes between casual flings and more significant romantic pursuits, particularly concerning Geralt's two primary love interests: Triss Merigold and Yennefer of Vengerberg. Successfully pursuing either Triss or Yennefer leads to a specific romance ending with an accompanying cutscene, while attempting to pursue both without making a definitive choice results in a negative outcome for Geralt.
Pursuing Triss Merigold
To achieve a romance ending with Triss, players must make specific choices before initiating the main quest "The Isle of Mists." After completing the Novigrad-based side quest "Count Reuven's Treasure," players should undertake "A Matter of Life and Death." During the masquerade, find Triss in the labyrinth and choose to kiss her; this is a timed decision. Later, during the "Now or Never" side quest, agree to help Triss. At the quest's conclusion, during her departure from the port, select the dialogue options "Stay with me" and "I love you" to secure the romance scene.
Pursuing Yennefer of Vengerberg
Romancing Yennefer requires actions before completing the main quest "Ugly Baby." After progressing through the main story quests on the Skellige Isles, from "The King is Dead – Long Live the King" to "The Calm Before the Storm," a side quest called "The Last Wish" will become available in Larvik. Here, after helping Yennefer, choose the dialogue option "I still love you, too." An additional romantic scene with Yennefer can be triggered during "The King is Dead – Long Live the King" quest. When faced with poisonous gas in a cave, opt to say "Damn, I wanna kiss you, Yen." Subsequently, when Yen teleports you both, select "Wouldn't mind watching…" This sequence leads to the notable "unicorn" cutscene. Later, during the "No Place Like Home" quest at Kaer Morhen, if you have declared your love, you can agree to retreat to Yennefer's bedroom.
The Consequences of Dual Romance
Attempting to romance both Triss and Yennefer simultaneously without choosing one will result in Geralt being tied to a bed at the Kingfisher Inn and subsequently rescued by Dandelion, locking players out of both romance endings. The critical juncture for these romances occurs when a declaration of love is made at the end of their respective quest lines. It is permissible to engage in earlier romantic interactions, such as kissing Triss during "A Matter of Life and Death" or sharing a moment with Yennefer during "The King is Dead – Long Live the King," as long as the final declaration of love is only made to one of them.
Secondary Romance Options
Beyond Triss and Yennefer, Geralt can pursue relationships with several other characters. These encounters are generally considered one-night stands and do not impact the main romance arcs:
- Keira Metz: After completing her associated quests, including "Magic Lamp" and "A Towerful of Mice," agree to help Keira at the end of "A Favor for a Friend" and follow her into the woods.
- Jutta an Dimun: In Skellige, complete the "Iron Maiden" side quest by defeating Jutta in a fistfight. Afterward, accept her invitation to visit her home.
- Madame Sasha: Succeed in the "High Stakes" Gwent tournament or agree to assist Sasha. Later, accept her dinner invitation and follow her upstairs.
- Shani: This romance is available in the "Hearts of Stone" expansion. Ensure you stay at the party during "Dead Man's Party" and later offer Shani rowan flowers during "A Midnight Clear."
- Syanna: Available in the "Blood and Wine" expansion. During the "Beyond Hill and Dale" quest, after defeating the giant, choose the dialogue options "Useful? How?" and then "Let her have her way with you."
- Brothel Workers: Geralt can pay coin to engage in short-term encounters with brothel workers, though these offer no lasting romantic development.
