An Unheard Farewell is likely the first quest players will encounter in Valor Mortis, tasking them with locating missing scouts for the Adjutant Sous-Officier in the Valley of Ashes. The scouts are hidden within a cave situated halfway up the elevator shaft accessible from 'The Climb' lantern. However, players must first ascend to the elevator's summit to unlock the path.
To begin, progress through the level, acquiring the pistol and unlocking the lift mechanism. Continue through the caves until you reach the top of the elevator. Here, you'll need to destroy two glowing Nephtogloblin growths to unblock the lift and then pull the lever to call it.
Once the elevator arrives, ride it down and disembark approximately halfway. Look for a ledge with a wall that can be burned away. Beyond this, you will encounter a challenging soldier enemy within the cave. Using fire attacks is recommended to deplete his health. After defeating him, retrieve the notes from behind a tent.
Continuing along the main path will eventually lead you back to the Adjutant Sous-Officier. At this point, you must decide whether to report the truth about the scouts' fate or to lie. Telling the truth will reward you with the Sleight of Hand amber. Returning to speak with the Adjutant after resting will grant additional catalysts as a bonus. If you choose to lie, you will still receive the Sleight of Hand amber. However, upon resting and returning to the cave where the scouts were found, you will discover his corpse and a Remnant's Return item, a single-use consumable that allows for catalyst recovery from any death location.
