Valve's Steam Frame VR headset, which launched in September with a starting price of $1,059, has inspired a new Windows screensaver created by Reddit user Kebakent. The project features artwork of the Steam Frame headset and its controllers bouncing around the screen.
As noted by the creator, the screensaver is designed to be configurable, with options to adjust object size, movement speed, rotation speed, and brightness. The project is free and open source, available under an MIT license, and includes a ready-to-run .scr file. Kebakent confirmed that Valve has granted permission to use the artwork for this non-commercial endeavor. This follows Valve's recent release of CAD files for the Steam Frame under a Creative Commons license, allowing for non-commercial modifications and derivative works, a practice also extended to the Steam Controller.
The creator humorously suggested that the screensaver might offer a psychological workaround for those deterred by the headset's price, allowing them to "pretend I already have a Steam Frame." While acknowledging it won't fully replicate the VR experience, the user highlighted it as an example of the "homebrew energy" within the Valve hardware community, referencing a custom Steam Deck boot animation inspired by the TV show Scrubs as another instance of community creativity.
