Arkade Gaming Gun Aims to Bring Light Gun Nostalgia to Modern Shooters

Arkade is a new PC peripheral designed to recapture the arcade light gun experience for modern shooters. The device aims to transform PC and Mac titles into experiences reminiscent of classics like Time Crisis and Virtua Cop. Arkade is slated for release in 2027.

The Arkade Gaming Gun utilizes proprietary technology that does not require external tracking hardware such as webcams or sensor bars. It connects to a PC via a USB-C charging dock, which also acts as a wireless receiver for the gun. A companion device manager allows users to customize button layouts and calibrate tracking performance.

Players grip the Arkade in a two-handed configuration. Character movement is handled by a thumbstick on the side of the barrel, accompanied by additional buttons for actions like jumping and weapon switching. The primary aiming mechanism involves physically pointing the gun at the target. The Arkade's trigger features a capacitive touch surface; a light grip activates aiming, allowing the on-screen crosshair to follow the gun's direction. Releasing the trigger locks the aiming orientation.

During a hands-on demonstration with the game Prodeus, initial disorientation with the simultaneous strafing and aiming controls was noted. However, with practice, the system became more intuitive, allowing for quick re-centering maneuvers akin to repositioning a mouse on its pad. The trigger offers two stages of operation: a half-press mimics a right-click for zooming, while a full press fires the weapon.

Beyond first-person shooters, the Arkade is said to support some third-person titles, including Fortnite and the Resident Evil 3 remake. Its creator, Joshua Fuchs, demonstrated its potential for creative use by pairing it with a racing wheel for drive-by shootings in Grand Theft Auto V.

The Arkade Gaming Gun currently supports PC, Mac, and Steam OS, with aspirations for future console compatibility. The peripheral is described as solidly constructed yet lightweight, designed for extended play sessions. The Arkade Gaming Gun is set to launch at $399 USD, with a discounted preorder option available on Arkade's website.
