Microsoft has revealed the Xbox Nano Controller, a smaller and more budget-friendly alternative to its standard gamepads. This new controller maintains compatibility with Xbox consoles, PCs, and tablets, but Microsoft is emphasizing its potential for use with other devices such as smart TVs and laptops.
The Nano Controller measures approximately five inches in length and weighs 3.5 ounces, making it significantly more compact than the current Xbox controller. It is priced at $49.99, a reduction from the typical $69.99 cost for a standard Xbox gamepad. Preorders for the Nano Controller are currently open.
Microsoft is pursuing partnerships to bundle the Nano Controller with select Samsung TVs this holiday season, including two months of Game Pass. The company is also exploring a similar collaboration with Meta to offer the controller and a Game Pass subscription to new Meta Quest owners, though details for this deal are still being finalized for a holiday release.
With both standard Xbox wireless and Bluetooth connectivity, the Nano Controller is expected to function with a wide array of devices that support Bluetooth. This broad compatibility could allow for gaming on platforms like the iPad.
While the Xbox Nano Controller marks Microsoft's entry into the mini-controller market, other companies like CRKD and 8BitDo have offered similar portable controllers. The primary appeal of such compact controllers lies in their ease of transport, fitting easily into bags without adding significant bulk.
This launch comes amid speculation about Microsoft's other controller developments, including the anticipated Xbox Elite Series 3 controller. The Xbox Nano Controller is slated to be available starting in November. Further details on the Samsung and Meta bundles are expected as the holiday season approaches.
