Nvidia's RTX 5080 Super Rumored for Early 2027 Release with 24GB VRAM

Rumors indicate that Nvidia may be preparing to launch a 24GB version of the RTX 5080 in early 2027, potentially filling a void left by the rumored cancellation of the RTX 5090 from commercial production. This upcoming GPU, codenamed the RTX 5080 Super, is reportedly set to offer 24GB of VRAM, a specification previously associated with a canceled RTX 5080 Super model. This development suggests a possible shift in Nvidia's strategy, with a greater allocation of GB202 GPUs towards professional RTX Pro cards.

Details emerging from Taiwanese outlet Benchlife suggest that add-in board partners have been verbally informed about the impending release of product development data for a 24GB RTX 5080. While concrete production details remain scarce, the existing knowledge base for a 24GB VRAM configuration, stemming from the previously planned RTX 5080 Super, could expedite manufacturing for a projected Q1 2027 launch. However, these are still speculative reports, and the RTX 50-series refresh has seen numerous changes, making any launch uncertain.

Some leakers, like Moore's Law is Dead, have suggested the possibility of an RTX 6090 launch in the first half of 2027, contradicting other speculation. If the 24GB RTX 5080 materializes, it is unlikely to offer significant gaming performance improvements. This is because the underlying GB203 chip is reportedly already fully utilized, meaning new cards will not feature higher core counts. Instead, the increased VRAM is expected to benefit local AI models, catering to users who might otherwise seek high-end professional cards but are looking for a more accessible option than the top-tier professional offerings.

Benchlife's reports also suggest that the standard 16GB RTX 5080 may be phased out alongside the RTX 5090. This would effectively remove the top two consumer-oriented GPUs from Nvidia's Blackwell generation lineup for gamers. Consequently, the RTX 5070 Ti, with its reported $1,500 price point, could become the highest-end option available to PC gamers, a situation that may leave enthusiasts with fewer choices at the premium end of the market.
