Owners of the Steam Deck can now personalize their achievement pop-up notifications to resemble those found on PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo consoles, or to create entirely custom designs. This functionality is made possible by a new plugin for the SteamOS handheld, called the Achievement Customizer.
The plugin goes beyond simply imitating existing platform styles. Users have the flexibility to design their pop-ups from scratch. As a Decky plugin, it is also expected to be compatible with other SteamOS-based Linux environments, such as Bazzite. The creator of the plugin has even suggested the possibility of making it compatible with the Steam Machine, for the few users still utilizing those devices.
While the Achievement Customizer is not yet available in the official Decky store, it can be installed manually. The process involves enabling Developer Mode on the Steam Deck and then installing the plugin using a provided URL. The creator has also made the plugin's code open source and available on GitHub, allowing users to review it if they have concerns about its implementation.
The plugin utilizes custom pixel art for its themes, which were hand-drawn by the creator. AI coding tools were employed during the development process. The creator notes that while achievement hunting may not appeal to all gamers, this customization offers a way to enhance the satisfaction derived from earning them.
